It works better under the ASIO4ALL driver for me and allows lower latency times, although it's low latency performance is not bad it doesn't go as low as RME, so if that's important you need to try and test before buy (although it has near zero latency direct monitoring which is useful). I also find it a bit buggy, like sometimes audio drops out completely and I have to go back into the Alesis control panel and switch the 'allow system sounds' box on and off again to correct this.

The drivers are a mixed bag - this unit ran great for me on my older Dell laptop which had a Texas Instruments chipset, but under the new Dell which has a ricoh chipset and Vista Ultimate 32, took a lot of messing around optimizing it and the latest driver from Alesis BSODs the computer and requires a system restore, so I have to use the older driver, Alesis says it has issues with Dell's bios but hasn't corrected this and this issue is months old. This was a few weeks ago and many music sites say it's not available, so I would think it has been discontinued in spite of Alesis telling me otherwise. The I/O 14 has been discontinued a while ago (which I own, a scaled down IO26 with 4 XLRs and 2 outputs only no RCA jack) but when I asked several dealers and Alesis if they discontinued the I/O 26 they all denied it. Saves me from booting up just to play some synths. I also use it as a pseudo mixer- the computer doesn't have to be on to use the monitoring function, which is kind of cool. Lots of input and output options, and the unit certainly sounds good. The only solution is to control the volume from within whatever app or program you are using. I've tried using the included software, contacting Alesis for more info, but nothing works. When I run a surround configuration, the volume for channels 3-8 is inaccessable from the frontpanel of the unit. The main volume knob only controls volume on Output 1 and 2. (to be fair, I haven't upgraded to snow leopard yet, so maybe it'll be better with that).Ģ) Surround support. When this happens, I have about three seconds to turn off my speakers before the unit resets to default, volume 100%. My unit decides to reset itself at random every other day or so.

In reality, there are two small but important things that drive me bonkers.ġ) The device drivers (both Mac and PC). On paper, this is everything I could ever ask for from an external firewire sound card. Just wanted to chime in here and share with you my love/hate relationship with this piece of gear.
